Travel questions
What do I need to enter South Africa?
To enter South Africa, you will need a valid passport that is valid for at least 30 days after your intended departure date and has at least two blank pages for entry stamps.
Depending on your nationality, you may also require a visa. Many countries are visa-exempt for short tourist stays (usually 30 to 90 days), but this depends on your nationality and length of stay, so it is important to confirm the latest requirements before travelling.
If a visa is required, it must be obtained in advance from a South African embassy or consulate in your home country.
We also recommend bringing proof of return or onward travel, travel insurance covering medical emergencies and disruptions, and any required health or vaccination documents depending on your travel route and history.
It’s always best to double-check the latest entry requirements for your specific nationality before travelling, as regulations can change from time to time.
Where should I book my flight for my Safari?
Your international flight destination will depend on your chosen travel itinerary and safari experience. Different journeys may require different entry points into South Africa, and we will guide you in selecting the most suitable airport before any bookings are made.
For your private photo safari at Kalima Lodge, we recommend booking your flight into O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, the most convenient and commonly used entry point for this region.
From Johannesburg, it is approximately a 4.5-hour scenic drive to the lodge, offering a beautiful introduction to the South African bushveld. Upon arrival, we will be there to welcome you and ensure a smooth transfer into your safari experience.
For any extended Southern African journeys or custom travel requests beyond Kalima Lodge, please contact us directly so we can assist in planning your itinerary.
What happens if my flight is delayed or cancelled?
Kindly inform us as soon as possible so we can adjust your transfer and arrival arrangements accordingly. We will always do our best to adapt your itinerary to your new arrival time and ensure your safari experience remains unaffected where possible.
If necessary, we can also assist with guidance on overnight accommodation to help make the process as smooth as possible.
We strongly recommend that all guests have comprehensive travel insurance to cover flight delays, cancellations, and unexpected travel disruptions.
Throughout any changes, our team remains in contact with you to ensure your journey to Kalima Safaris stays as seamless and stress-free as possible.
South Africa questions
What currency is used in South Africa?
The official currency used in South Africa is the South African Rand (ZAR), symbolised as R.
Cash is widely accepted, especially for tips, small purchases, and in more remote areas. However, credit and debit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are commonly accepted in most hotels, restaurants, shops, and airports.
ATMs are also widely available in cities, towns, and major tourist areas, making it easy to withdraw local currency during your stay.
We recommend travelling with a small amount of cash in Rand for convenience, while using cards for larger payments where possible.
Is it safe to travel and hunt in South Africa?
Yes — South Africa is a well-known international travel destination, visited safely by millions of travellers each year.
When you travel with Kalima Safaris, your journey is carefully planned and guided. We stay with you throughout your experience and, because we know the country well, we only use trusted routes, destinations, and travel areas — avoiding any unnecessary risk zones.
Like any destination, we still recommend basic travel awareness, such as keeping valuables secure and following your guide’s advice.
With the right planning and support, South Africa offers an unforgettable experience filled with beauty, culture, and adventure.
Can children come on safari? Is it safe for them?
Yes, children are welcome at Kalima Safaris, and we do our best to create a safe and enjoyable experience for families.
Safety is always a priority. When travelling with Kalima Safaris, your itinerary is planned carefully with family comfort and safety in mind.
Some wildlife activities may have age restrictions depending on the location or experience, but there are always alternative family-friendly options available.
With the right planning, safari travel can be an incredible opportunity for children to experience nature, wildlife, and adventure in a safe and guided environment.
What’s the weather like?
South Africa enjoys a generally mild, sunny climate with warm summers and cooler winters, making it a year-round destination.
Summer (October to April): Warm to hot temperatures with occasional afternoon rain showers, especially in inland and bush areas. Coastal regions are sunny and perfect for beach travel.
Winter (May to September): Dry, sunny days with cooler mornings and evenings — this is also the best time for safari and wildlife viewing in the bushveld.
Different regions vary slightly: Cape Town has a Mediterranean-style climate (wet winters and dry summers), while inland and safari areas are generally drier in winter and warmer in summer.
Overall, South Africa offers great travel weather throughout the year — it simply depends on the type of experience you’re looking for.
Will I need a power adapter or converter in South Africa?
Yes — South Africa uses a different plug system from most countries, so you will likely need a power adapter. The standard voltage is 220–230V, with a Type M plug (large round three-pin plug) being the most common, along with some Type C and Type N sockets in certain places.
Most modern hotels, lodges, and airports may also have universal charging points or USB ports, but this is not guaranteed everywhere — especially in more remote safari or bushveld areas.
A universal travel adapter is highly recommended so you can safely charge phones, cameras, laptops, and other devices throughout your trip.
If your devices are not dual-voltage (220–240V), you may also need a voltage converter, although most modern electronics like phones and laptops already support this automatically.
Is the water save to drink in South Africa?
At Kalima Lodge, safe drinking water is always available for our guests throughout their stay.
In South Africa, tap water in most cities, towns, and reputable lodges is treated and generally safe to drink. At Kalima Safaris, we also provide filtered or bottled water where preferred, ensuring comfort and peace of mind for all guests.
During your safari experience, we ensure that clean drinking water is available at the lodge and during activities, so you remain well-hydrated whether you are out in the bushveld or relaxing at the lodge.
As a general travel recommendation, some guests prefer bottled or filtered water when travelling in more remote areas, depending on personal preference.
If you have any specific concerns or requirements, please feel free to let us know before your arrival and we will ensure everything is prepared for you.
Will I have cell phone service and internet access?
In most major towns and cities in South Africa, you can generally expect good mobile coverage and reliable connectivity.
Wi-Fi is available at Kalima Lodge for your convenience, although speeds may vary at times due to the remote location.
What should I pack?
We recommend bringing comfortable, broken-in walking shoes or sneakers, along with breathable clothing suited for warm days in the bushveld. A light jacket or jersey is ideal for cooler mornings and evenings.
Neutral-coloured clothing works best for safari drives and wildlife viewing. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential for protection from the African sun.
For your photo safari, please bring your camera, chargers, extra batteries, and the correct travel adapters to ensure you are always ready to capture wildlife moments.
Most importantly, pack for comfort, practicality, and time in nature.

What is the best time to come to South Africa?
South Africa is a year-round destination, with every season offering something unique depending on the type of experience you are looking for.
For general travel in South Africa:
The most popular months are September to April, when the weather is warm and ideal for sightseeing, beach holidays, wine routes, and exploring destinations such as Cape Town, the Garden Route, and coastal regions. Summer months (December to February) are lively and vibrant, while spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures with fewer crowds.
For the Bushveld and safari experiences:
The best time to visit the bushveld is from May to September, during the dry winter season. Cooler temperatures, less vegetation, and animals gathering around water sources make wildlife easier to spot. Early mornings and evenings can be chilly, but daytime conditions are usually sunny and comfortable.
Warm Season (October to April):
This is when the bushveld transforms into a lush, green paradise with dramatic skies, newborn animals, and excellent birdwatching. It is also a wonderful time for photography and scenic beauty.
At Kalima Safaris, we tailor each journey to the season and your interests.
What kind of vehicles will we be traveling in during my stay?
During your stay at Kalima Safaris, all travel is designed to be comfortable, practical, and suited to the safari experience.
For airport transfers and longer-distance travel, we use reliable, air-conditioned shuttle services or trusted transport partners to ensure a smooth journey to and from the lodge.
At Kalima Lodge, safari drives are conducted in open or safari-ready vehicles designed specifically for wildlife viewing and photography. These vehicles provide excellent visibility, stable positioning for cameras, and an immersive bush experience while maintaining comfort and safety.
For reserves such as Marakele, Pilanesberg, Predator Park, Elephant Sanctuary, Lion and Rhino Park, or other activities, guests will travel with us in a comfortable, air-conditioned closed safari vehicle suitable for road travel between destinations.
What kind of food and drink can I expect?
During your stay at Kalima Safaris, you can expect freshly prepared, home-style bushveld dining with a strong focus on flavour, comfort, and quality.
At Kalima Lodge, all meals are prepared by your private safari chef, ensuring a personalised dining experience throughout your stay. From hearty breakfasts to relaxed lunches and beautifully prepared dinners, every meal is made fresh and served in a warm, welcoming atmosphere surrounded by nature.
You can enjoy a variety of dishes inspired by South African cuisine, including traditional favourites, farm-style meals, and seasonal ingredients prepared with care. A highlight of many stays is a classic South African braai (barbecue), often enjoyed under the stars in true bushveld style.
A selection of beverages is available throughout your stay, including soft drinks, fresh juices, coffee, and a variety of local wines to complement your meals.
If you have any specific dietary requirements, allergies, or preferences, please let us know in advance so we can prepare accordingly.
You are also welcome to view our Gallery page to get a feel for the food, atmosphere, and overall dining experience at Kalima Lodge.
For any travel experiences beyond Kalima Lodge, dining styles and offerings may vary depending on the itinerary. You are welcome to contact us for more information on extended journey arrangements.
What should I know about tipping?
Tipping in South Africa is appreciated and is a common way to thank staff for excellent service, although it is always at your own discretion. During your travels, you may choose to tip guides, drivers, lodge staff, restaurant servers, and hotel housekeeping if you feel the service has been exceptional.
In restaurants, a gratuity of around 10% to 15% is common if a service charge has not already been included. For guides, drivers, and hospitality staff, tipping amounts can vary depending on the level of service and length of your stay.
We recommend carrying a small amount of local currency for convenience, as cash tips are often the easiest option in some areas.
Most importantly, tipping is never an obligation — it is simply a personal gesture of appreciation for warm hospitality and memorable service during your South African journey.
Medical questions
Do I need any vaccinations or malaria medication for my safari?
For safari areas such as the bushveld and Kruger region, malaria risk can be present in certain seasons and locations, particularly during the warmer, wetter months. Because of this, we recommend that you consult your doctor or travel clinic before departure to discuss whether malaria prophylaxis (preventative medication) is suitable for your itinerary.
In addition to malaria advice, some travellers may choose to ensure routine vaccinations are up to date, such as tetanus, hepatitis A, and others as recommended by a healthcare professional.
We always advise checking the latest travel health guidelines before your trip, as recommendations can change. Your safety and well-being are important to us, and we are happy to advise further based on your exact travel route and time of year.
What if I need medical care or prescription medication during my trip?
South Africa has a good standard of medical care, especially in cities and major travel regions, with both private clinics and hospitals available. If you need medical attention during your trip, we will assist you in locating the nearest suitable medical facility and help coordinate transport if required.
For minor issues such as headaches, allergies, or small injuries, basic medication is often available at pharmacies, many of which are easily accessible in towns and cities. For more serious concerns, private medical facilities are generally recommended for quicker service and high-quality care.
If you take regular prescription medication, we strongly recommend bringing enough supply for the full duration of your trip, along with a copy of your prescription. It is also advisable to keep medication in your hand luggage when travelling.
Should you require assistance during your stay, our team will be available to support you and ensure you receive the care you need as quickly and comfortably as possible.
Is there medical support or a first aid kit at the hotel, lodge or camp?
Yes — all lodges, hotels, and travel vehicles used during your journey are equipped with basic first aid kits to handle minor injuries or common health concerns such as cuts, headaches, insect bites, or small scrapes.
Staff are also trained to provide initial assistance in case of minor incidents and will respond quickly to ensure your comfort and safety.
For more serious medical situations, we will assist in arranging access to the nearest medical clinic or hospital, and emergency services can be contacted at any time if required.
While remote safari areas are more limited in terms of on-site medical facilities, we ensure that clear emergency procedures are in place and that help can be accessed efficiently when needed.
We also strongly recommend that all guests travel with comprehensive travel insurance to cover any unexpected medical needs during their trip.
Payment questions
How and when do I pay for my safari?
To ensure a smooth and well-organised experience, your full travel package is payable prior to arrival. This allows us to confirm all arrangements and deliver a seamless itinerary from start to finish.
A 50% non-refundable deposit is required to secure your booking, with the remaining balance payable before arrival unless otherwise arranged.
During your trip, you may choose to add optional experiences such as additional excursions or activities. Any extra services or personal expenses can be settled during your stay or on the final day of travel.
Please note that departure transfers and final travel arrangements are only confirmed once all outstanding balances have been settled in full. This ensures a smooth conclusion to your journey.
Payments can be made via international bank transfer, and we will provide all necessary banking details in advance. Major credit cards are also accepted, subject to a small processing fee.
We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance to cover cancellations, delays, or unexpected changes to your plans.
Is my deposit refundable?
To secure your booking, a 50% deposit is required and is non-refundable. This allows us to confirm availability, reserve accommodation, and begin planning your personalised travel experience.
However, we understand that travel plans can change. In certain cases, your deposit may be transferred or rolled over to a new travel date, provided the new booking is made within 12 months of the original date and subject to availability.
We strongly recommend that all guests take out comprehensive travel insurance to protect against unexpected changes, cancellations, or disruptions to travel plans.
Can I pay in installments?
Yes — we offer a flexible payment structure for your convenience.
To secure your booking, a 50% non-refundable deposit is required at the time of confirmation. The remaining balance can then be paid in 2 installments prior to your arrival, with the full amount due before your trip begins, unless otherwise arranged.
This structure allows you to spread the cost of your journey while ensuring all arrangements can be confirmed and prepared in advance.
Please note that all deposits remain non-refundable, and we strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance to protect against unexpected changes or cancellations.
What currency do I pay in?
All payments for Kalima Safaris are made in US Dollars (USD). This makes it simple and convenient for our international guests to plan and manage their travel costs.
If you prefer, payments can also be accepted in other major currencies such as EUR or GBP, converted at the applicable exchange rate at the time of payment.
Bank transfer details will always be provided in advance, and we ensure a smooth and secure payment process from booking through to the completion of your journey.
Is my payment secure?
Yes — your payment is handled through secure and trusted international banking systems. We primarily process payments via international bank transfer in US Dollars (USD), which is a standard and secure method used worldwide for travel bookings.
All banking details are provided directly by Kalima Safaris, and we ensure clear communication throughout the payment process to avoid any uncertainty or risk.
We do not store sensitive financial information, and all transactions are processed through recognised banking channels.
For additional peace of mind, we recommend using your bank’s secure international transfer services or speaking with your bank if you have any concerns before sending payment.
