What do I need to enter South Africa?
To enter South Africa, you will need a valid passport that is valid for at least 30 days after your intended departure date and has at least two blank pages for entry stamps.
Depending on your nationality, you may also require a visa. Many countries are visa-exempt for short tourist stays (usually 30 to 90 days), but this depends on your nationality and length of stay, so it is important to confirm the latest requirements before travelling.
If a visa is required, it must be obtained in advance from a South African embassy or consulate in your home country.
We also recommend bringing proof of return or onward travel, travel insurance covering medical emergencies and disruptions, and any required health or vaccination documents depending on your travel route and history.

Where should I book my flight for my Safari?
Your international flight destination will depend on your chosen travel itinerary and safari experience. Different journeys may require different entry points into South Africa, and we will guide you in selecting the most suitable airport before any bookings are made.
For your private photo safari at Kalima Lodge, we recommend booking your flight into O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, the most convenient and commonly used entry point for this region.
From Johannesburg, it is approximately a 4.5-hour scenic drive to the lodge, offering a beautiful introduction to the South African bushveld. Upon arrival, we will be there to welcome you and ensure a smooth transfer into your safari experience.

What happens if my flight is delayed or cancelled?
Kindly inform us as soon as possible so we can adjust your transfer and arrival arrangements accordingly. We will always do our best to adapt your itinerary to your new arrival time and ensure your safari experience remains unaffected where possible.
If necessary, we can also assist with guidance on overnight accommodation to help make the process as smooth as possible.
We strongly recommend that all guests have comprehensive travel insurance to cover flight delays, cancellations, and unexpected travel disruptions.
Throughout any changes, our team remains in contact with you to ensure your journey to Kalima Safaris stays as seamless and stress-free as possible.

What is the best time to come to South Africa?
South Africa is a year-round destination, with every season offering something unique depending on the type of experience you are looking for.
For general travel in South Africa:
The most popular months are September to April, when the weather is warm and ideal for sightseeing, beach holidays, wine routes, and exploring destinations such as Cape Town, the Garden Route, and coastal regions. Summer months (December to February) are lively and vibrant, while spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures with fewer crowds.
For the Bushveld and safari experiences:
The best time to visit the bushveld is from May to September, during the dry winter season. Cooler temperatures, less vegetation, and animals gathering around water sources make wildlife easier to spot. Early mornings and evenings can be chilly, but daytime conditions are usually sunny and comfortable.
Warm Season (October to April):
This is when the bushveld transforms into a lush, green paradise with dramatic skies, newborn animals, and excellent birdwatching. It is also a wonderful time for photography and scenic beauty.

What kind of vehicles will we be traveling in during my stay?
During your stay at Kalima Safaris, all travel is designed to be comfortable, practical, and suited to the safari experience.
For airport transfers and longer-distance travel, we use reliable, air-conditioned shuttle services or trusted transport partners to ensure a smooth journey to and from the lodge.
At Kalima Lodge, safari drives are conducted in open or safari-ready vehicles designed specifically for wildlife viewing and photography. These vehicles provide excellent visibility, stable positioning for cameras, and an immersive bush experience while maintaining comfort and safety.
For reserves such as Marakele, Pilanesberg, Predator Park, Elephant Sanctuary, Lion and Rhino Park, or other activities, guests will travel with us in a comfortable, air-conditioned closed safari vehicle suitable for road travel between destinations.
What kind of food and drink can I expect?
During your stay at Kalima Safaris, you can expect freshly prepared, home-style bushveld dining with a strong focus on flavour, comfort, and quality.
At Kalima Lodge, all meals are prepared by your private safari chef, ensuring a personalised dining experience throughout your stay. From hearty breakfasts to relaxed lunches and beautifully prepared dinners, every meal is made fresh and served in a warm, welcoming atmosphere surrounded by nature.
You can enjoy a variety of dishes inspired by South African cuisine, including traditional favourites, farm-style meals, and seasonal ingredients prepared with care. A highlight of many stays is a classic South African braai (barbecue), often enjoyed under the stars in true bushveld style.
A selection of beverages is available throughout your stay, including soft drinks, fresh juices, coffee, and a variety of local wines to complement your meals.

What should I know about tipping?
Tipping in South Africa is appreciated and is a common way to thank staff for excellent service, although it is always at your own discretion. During your travels, you may choose to tip guides, drivers, lodge staff, restaurant servers, and hotel housekeeping if you feel the service has been exceptional.
In restaurants, a gratuity of around 10% to 15% is common if a service charge has not already been included. For guides, drivers, and hospitality staff, tipping amounts can vary depending on the level of service and length of your stay.
We recommend carrying a small amount of local currency for convenience, as cash tips are often the easiest option in some areas.
Most importantly, tipping is never an obligation — it is simply a personal gesture of appreciation for warm hospitality and memorable service during your South African journey.

What’s the weather like?

Summer (October to April): Warm to hot temperatures with occasional afternoon rain showers, especially in inland and bush areas. Coastal regions are sunny and perfect for beach travel.
Winter (May to September): Dry, sunny days with cooler mornings and evenings — this is also the best time for safari and wildlife viewing in the bushveld.
Different regions vary slightly: Cape Town has a Mediterranean-style climate (wet winters and dry summers), while inland and safari areas are generally drier in winter and warmer in summer.

Will I need a power adapter or converter in South Africa?

Is the water save to drink in South Africa?

As a general travel recommendation, some guests prefer bottled or filtered water when travelling in more remote areas, depending on personal preference.
